Job Hunting

Half the battle is finding a job in the first place

What is your preferred method of looking for a job? If you said “the internet,” you’re not alone. According to the Internet Business Network, approximately 77 percent of internet users go online to search for jobs. But using the Internet for your job search can present some problems--as many disheartened job seekers will attest. Here are eight mistakes to avoid while job hunting online.

Job hunting is a skill which you need to learn

Mistake # 1: Not guarding your privacy

Many people post their resumes on job boards and employment websites without hiding their contact information. This is a huge mistake because it makes you an easy target for identity theft. Hide your identity and let employers contact you through the internal messaging system of the employment website.

Mistake # 2: Relying exclusively on the internet for your job search

Although job hunting online is a great way to search for employment, it should only be one tool in your job hunting toolbox. Data compiled by the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that those who use several job search methods get hired more quickly than those who use just one or two methods.

Mistake # 3: Using only the top job search websites

While many job seekers flock to the big name job search websites, you should not limit your job search to just those. Rather, there are many smaller “niche” employment websites that can cater more directly to your employment needs.

Mistake # 4: Sending your CV to everyone

While job hunting online, it is easy to push a button and apply for every job you come across--just in case--but you may actually be ruining your chances of employment by doing so. Hiring managers will get sick of seeing your resume come through for every job that you are not qualified for and may just start deleting your applications.

Mistake # 5: Blasting your CV

Many online websites have CV blast functions where you can send your CV out to every employer and recruiter around. Don’t do it. You have the best chance of landing a job--or at least an interview--with a CV that is specifically targeted to a particular job opening.

Mistake #6: Being lazy

It is not enough to hit the apply button and submit your resume. If you want to get a job--while job hunting online or offline--you need to be proactive. After hitting the apply button, try waiting for a week and then sending the employer a follow-up email of interest.

Mistake #7: Not visiting online company career centers

Just as most companies have websites, most also have online career centers where they post their current job openings. You won’t always find these jobs on online employment websites, which is why it’s so important to visit these career centers to see what’s out there.

Mistake #8: Not using the Internet for career networking

Networking with friends, business associates, and former coworkers remains one of the best ways to get jobs. Thanks to the internet, networking for career purposes has become much easier with websites like Linkedin and Facebook.

If you avoid these eight mistakes of job hunting online you will have a much better chance of landing your dream job.
